The Volkswagen Tiguan R will officially go on sale in the month of October for the local market. Just shy of a million Rand, here is what the 235 kW Golf-based SUV includes in the price tag.
The Tiguan nameplate has served the Volkswagen brand in South Africa admirably over the 14-year period it has been sold on local soil. For the first time, the venerable family hauler will receive R treatment and carry over the running gear from the potent Golf R.

What this means is that the Tiguan R is equipped with a 2,0-litre turbocharged motor that is capable of 235 kW and 400 N.m which helps it achieve 0-100 km/h sprint in 5,1 seconds. This is also courtesy of an all-wheel drive 4MOTION system that enables optimal traction off of the line while R-Performance Torque Vectoring keep things in check when the road ahead features a few curves. Volkswagen states that this new system “sets a new benchmark for SUV driving dynamics.”

The Tiguan R’s technical equipment includes a powerful 18-inch brake system with blue brake calipers, a DCC chassis (with adaptively controlled shock absorbers) lowered by 10mm and a driving profile selection enhanced for the Tiguan R with an additional R profile. This sporty mode can be activated by means of a blue R button on the new multi-function sports steering wheel. This is also equipped with separate large paddles for manual control of the 7-speed DSG gearbox.
Exterior features of the new Tiguan R include bumpers in ‘R’ design, exterior mirror covers in matt chrome, a high-gloss black rear diffuser, black wheel housing extensions, 20-inch Misano alloy wheels, Lights and Vision Package, panoramic sunroof and Park Distance Control (front and rear). The new Tiguan R also comes available with a choice of six exterior colours.
On the inside, the Tiguan R sets itself apart with standard features such as premium Nappa leather seats with an ‘R’ logo, a customised Digital Cockpit with an integrated lap timer, as well as a Carbon Grey decorative trim. Additional standard features include the Discover Pro system with satellite navigation, Wireless App-Connect and Voice Control as well as Keyless Entry with safelock and an electric tailgate and luggage compartment and the panoramic sunroof.
Optional features in the Tiguan R include the trailer hitch, IQ.Light LED Matrix Headlights, Akrapovič Exhaust, 21-inch Estoril alloy wheels, Head-Up Display, Mobile Inductive Charging System, Harman Kardon sound system, Area view camera system with Park Assist and Park Distance Control, Rear view camera system with Park Assist and Park Distance Control, IQ.DRIVE: Adaptive Cruise Control (which can be coupled with Lane change assist with side assist, park assist and autonomous emergency braking) as well as the Trailer Manoeuvring System with Park Assist.
