Debuting for Japan, Toyota has unveiled a new version of the Crown Sport which features a PHEV powertrain capable of 225 kW.

South Africa is on the shortlist to receive some of Toyota’s snazzy Crown range and now the automaker has debuted a model for its home country which is now receiving a charging port and a potent powertrain.
Although the model in the metal has already arrived, it will now feature a 2,5-liter petrol engine and an electric motor, delivering a total of 225 kW.

For the PHEV variant, Toyota has enhanced stopping power by upgrading the front brakes with 20-inch discs hugged by six-piston calipers, finished in red at both axles. Paddle shifters have been added, and extra braces to the floor tunnel increase body rigidity compared to the non-plug-in hybrid Crown Sport.
As a plug-in hybrid, the vehicle excels in efficiency. A lithium-ion battery beneath the floor provides a pure electric range of 90 km, with 80% of charge possible in 38 minutes. The gasoline tank’s 55 liter capacity allows the Crown Sport PHEV to cover over 1 200 kilometers.
Equipped with 21-inch black wheels and wider tires, the vehicle benefits from an adaptive suspension with modified shock absorbers, offering a “planted ride” according to Toyota. The Crown Sport PHEV supports bidirectional charging with a 1 500W (AC 100V) external power supply function, which can be useful in emergencies and for powering various devices outdoors.

Priced at ¥7 650 000 – or just under R1 million, Toyota aims to sell around 300 units of the Crown Sport PHEV each month in Japan.
