Toyota South Africa will introduce the all-new Fortuner into the local market in a matter of weeks. This popular model has, however, been available in other markets for some time already.
In Thailand, Toyota has already launched a more sporty version of this large SUV, dubbed the Toyota Fortuner TRD Sportivo.
Bespoke looks
For the most part this model is about sportier looks rather than upgraded performance. Remoulded front and rear bumpers are the most noticeable changes. White models feature a black roof; the model is also available in black.
Rolling stock consists of bespoke 20-inch black alloy wheels shod with low-profile rubber. To keep the ride height in check new springs and dampers have been installed.
Better braking
The most obvious of the performance upgrades is the adoption of larger, ventilated discs all round.
TRD models are exclusively fitted with the Fortuner’s 2,8-litre turbodiesel motor. TRD has not worked its magic on the motor so it still develops 130 kW with 450 N.m of torque.
Tailored interior
Inside buyers of the TRD models will experience a two-tone treatment, red and black being the colours of choice. A hard-hitting JBL sound system provides entertainment.
At the time of writing there was no word from Toyota SA regarding the TRD’s introduction into the local market, though judging from the number of customised Fortuners seen on a daily basis it seems that there is definitely a demand for such a model.
