The all-new Toyota GR 86 has been given a number of thorough upgrades at the hands of performance tuning-specialist HKS. The Japanese compact sports coupe has been handed aerodynamic, suspension and powertrain revisions in order to make it more competitive in controlled racing environments.
Providing an increased amount of downforce is a thorough body kit that consists of a front lip spoiler and canards, side skirts, a rear under spoiler and a GT wing and ducktail combination mounted to the boot.
Joining the additional downforce is an improved suspension system that consists of a dual PVS with an improved shape of needle jets and bump stop rubbers with low friction technology. Additionally, a set of Hipermax S coilovers offers further improvements to the ride.
Improvements to the dynamics are welcome for the Toyota GR 86 because HKS has fitted a compact GT2 supercharger to the 2,4-litre flat-four engine. This part boasts a unique torque response traction drive system that provides more power and improved usability, the firm claims. HKS has not revealed how much this supercharger increases the standard power output of 173 kW and 250 N.m of torque by.
Adding to the element of sound, HKS has fitted a Hi-Power Spec L II super lightweight sports exhaust system made of 0,5 mm thin plating. The pair of exhaust tips has been wrapped in titanium for added character.
The Toyota GR 86 was revealed two months ago as a follow-up to the highly popular GT 86. The naturally aspirated rear-wheel drive sports coupe will now be badged under the Japanese brand’s Gazoo Racing performance division as its sits next to the Supra and Yaris as an entry-level offering.
While being a bit faster than its predecessor, the new GR 86 retains almost identical proportions to retain a low centre-of-gravity. Keeping overall mass down are aluminium roof panels and fenders. The front seats and mufflers have also been lightened to reduce mass to a claimed kerb figure of 1 270 kg. For better lateral performance, the GR 86’s torsional rigidity has been enhanced by 50 per cent over the previous model.
