Earlier in October 2020, we brought you local pricing for the updated Toyota Land Cruiser Prado range, complete with the updated 150 kW engine from the refreshed Hilux. Now the details have gone official.

Yes, the Prado has gained the Hilux bakkie’s uprated 2,8 GD powerplant, tuned to deliver 150 kW between 3 000 and 3 400 r/min plus 500 N.m from 1 600 to 2 800 r/min. All models ship standard with a six-speed automatic transmission (with paddles on the VX-L variants) and permanent all-wheel drive.

This latest-generation 2,8 GD-6 engine – which replaces the old 3,0-litre unit in the Prado range, while the 202 kW/381 N.m naturally aspirated 4,0-litre V6 petrol engine soldiers on – has received what the Japanese firm calls a “raft of upgrades”, including a new ball-bearing turbocharger with a larger turbine and impeller, and improved engine rigidity and cooling.

Toyota also says it offers “better fuel economy” thanks to “optimised pistons and piston rings”, changes to the cylinder block and head, higher fuel-injection flow rate and the adoption of “high-performance materials” for the exhaust manifold.

Claimed fuel consumption improves to 7,9 L/100 km, with the engine sipping from an 87-litre main tank and a 63-litre sub-tank. Maximum braked towing capacity has increased to 3 000 kg (up 500 kg) on 2,8 models.

A new-generation multimedia system is fitted across the range, incorporating a larger nine-inch touchscreen display with “enhanced” voice recognition and compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All models ship with a nine-service/90 000 km service plan (with intervals of 10 000 km) plus a three-year/100 000 km warranty.
