Positioned as the new flagship offering in Toyota South Africa Motors’ Land Cruiser Prado lineup, the VX-L derivative has touched down on local shores. See pricing below.

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has introduced a new flagship model to its Land Cruiser Prado portfolio, with the SA arm of the Japanese automaker listing the VX-L model on its website. Distinguishing the VX-L variant from its stablemates, the new range-topper features body-coloured wing mirrors and bumpers, and 20-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in 265/60-size tyres. (The VX-R model rolls on 18-inch items shod in 265/65-size rubber.) Stepping inside, VX-L spec upgrades to a 14-speaker JBL sound system (the VX-R’s audio setup is equipped with 10 speakers). The leather-trimmed gear selector gains chrome finishes. Paddle shifters are also present.
Comparing the online spec sheets of the VX-L and VX-R, the former grade gains an additional two driving modes – Sport S+ and Custom. It also seems that, while the VX-R features centre and rear limited-slip differentials (LSD), VX-L is only fitted with an aft LSD. We also noted that, arguably owing to the new wheels, that the VX-L gains an 10 mm increase in ground clearance.
Toyota Land Cruiser Prado VX-L Price in SA
The Land Cruiser Prado VX-L is priced from R1 513 300, making it R13 100 more expensive than the VX-R derivative. Included with the package are a nine services/90 000 km service plan and a warranty spanning three years or 100 000 km.
As a reminder, the Land Cruiser Prado is exclusively available with Toyota’s tried-and-tested 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, which will again be available with the SA-bound new Hilux. The 2.8GD unit churns out 150 kW and 500 N.m of torque, delivered to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
