Upgraded (150 kW) Toyota Hilux: official details for SA released!

By: CAR magazine

We’ve already brought you pricing and initial details of the refreshed Toyota Hilux, but now Toyota South Africa Motors has released extra information on the updated version of its best-selling bakkie.

As we pointed out in that scoop story, the Hilux line-up has been revised (“in keeping with evolving market trends”, says Toyota). The S and SR models retain the outgoing model’s front end, while the SRX variants have been replaced by Raider derivatives, complete with the new face revealed back in June 2020.

Raider models fitted with the 110 kW/400 N.m 2,4 GD-6 powertrain feature four-bulb Halogen headlamps, while the 2,8 GD-6 Raider models upgrade to bi-LED headlamps and LED indicators. Both feature 17-inch alloy wheels in a dark-grey metallic finish and wrapped in 265/65 R17 rubber.

Legend models (which effectively replace the Legend 50 derivatives) each feature a trapezoidal grille plus a bonnet protector and skidplate, along with dark-plated headlamp inserts and a centred chrome inlay flanking the Toyota insignia. A set of two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels with darkened centre caps and shod in 265/60 R18 rubber is included.

There’s also an optional “Legend RS” accessory package (for Hilux Legend 2,8 GD-6 4×4 models) which adds a motorised roller shutter, a graphite-coloured sports bar, rubberised bedliner, an assisted tailgate (with a central-locking function) and dust-defence kit. While Toyota SA Motors doesn’t say how much the kit costs, our earlier information shows a figure of R85 500.

Inside, Raider models gain a new instrument cluster design. Legend variants, meanwhile, receive model-specific accents on the instrument cluster, interior trim panels, switchgear and gear lever. Blue door illumination, perforated leather upholstery and black roof lining are also included. Both Raider and Legend variants have upgraded to a fresh 8,0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Nine exterior colours are on offer, including new Oxide Bronze and Pearl White hues. Attitude Black, meanwhile, is exclusively available on the Hilux Legend 2,8 GD-6 4×4.

As we’ve already pointed out, the 2,8-litre turbodiesel engine has had its peak outputs hiked to 150 kW and 500 N.m in automatic form (though manual models remain at 420 N.m). The Japanese firm furthermore says it has improved this powertrain’s fuel economy by “adopting a larger turbocharger and a new common-rail injection system”.

Interestingly, the 2,4 GD-6 4×4 model can now tow up to 3,5 tonnes, matching the 2,8 GD-6 4×4’s figure. Toyota also claims to have “improved ride comfort without compromising off-road performance and durability” thanks to new spring rates, shock absorbers and suspension bushes. It says the result is “more agile handling” and better ride comfort, “particularly when unladen”.

What else has changed? Well, the base S model now features an emergency brake signal function while the SR grade gains a limited-slip differential and variable flow control power steering. Legend 4×4 models, meanwhile, boast the Toyota Safety Sense system as standard, which includes a pre-collision system, lane-departure alert and adaptive cruise control.

As before, all Hilux models ship with a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a nine-service/90 000 km service plan.
