The highly anticipated eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI has landed in South Africa ahead of its official launch which has been penned in for the third quarter of this year. The reason for the long wait, according to VWSA, is due to the semiconductor shortage.
“The Volkswagen Group has been impacted by the global shortage of the semiconductor chips and all vehicles built on the MQB platform have been affected. For this reason, the launch of the Golf 8 GTI in South Africa will now move to the third quarter,” said Steffen Knapp, Head of the Volkswagen Passenger Car Brand.
“We are working closely with our German counterparts to ensure that we get as many Golf 8 GTI units for the local market as possible. A few Golf 8 GTI units started arriving in the country from mid-April. These units will be stockpiled until we have enough vehicles for the launch at the beginning of the third quarter,” added Knapp.
The launch of this Volkswagen Golf GTI is a highly anticipated one, with our market being one of the biggest in the world outside of Europe. With the previous generation, over 14 000 units were sold since it was launched in July 2013. The Golf range was the best-selling model in its segment, with it claiming a 21,9 per cent market share.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI will be powered by the EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine pushing 180 kW and 370 N.m of torque to the fronts via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. With this, it’ll sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6,4 seconds. Dynamic chassis control with variable shock absorbers will be available as an option, as will dynamic indicators and a panoramic sunroof.
Standard features, meanwhile, will include 18-inch “Richmond” alloy wheels, VW’s lights and vision package (with high-beam control light assist), Climatronic air conditioning, a heated leather-wrapped sports steering wheel, “GTI Vienna” leather seats, the “Composition Media” sound system, the 10,25-inch multi-colour InnoVision cockpit, App-Connect, cruise control (with a speed limiter), parking sensors, wireless smartphone charging and 30-colour ambient lighting.
