Previewed just six months ago, Volkswagen has lifted the covers off its new ID.4 compact SUV. underpinned by the firm's MEB modular platform, the new EV promises generous packaging, modern styling and an operating range of up to 520 km.

Following the ID.3, this is the second product to be developed under Volkswagen’s electrified ID sub-brand. Here, a rear-mounted motor fed by a 77 kWh battery develops 150 kW and 310 N.m of torque which allows ID.4 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 8,5 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h. On a single full charge, the ID.4 offers an operating range of 520 km. Being rear-wheel driven and sporting a ground clearance of 210 mm, Volkswagen promises that the ID.4 will be proficient over gentle off-road terrain.

The E-SUV’s dynamic design offers a smooth drag coefficient of 0,28 and houses futuristic head- and taillamp technology. Up front, it uses an interactive” IQ.Light” LED matrix system which sports a collection of light-emitting diodes, swivelling lens modules and an intelligently controlled main beam. At the rear, a 3D LED cluster with the same diodes and an intensive red hue is fitted. The 21-inch alloy wheels ties up the athletic design.

Within the cabin, a focus has been placed on generous packaging and futuristic design. Owing to its innovative modular platform, Volkswagen was able to package the 4 580 mm-long ID.4's interior in such a way that the space on offer rivals that of crossovers one segment above it. Volkswagen claims boot and utility measurements of 543 dm3 and 1 575 dm3, respectively. 

Tactile buttons within the cabin are all but absent. Instead, two displays, one of which is a 12-inch infotainment screen and the other a digital gauge cluster, offers touch functionality and voice control through a Hello ID voice control suite. A rather futuristic augmented reality head-up display with navigation assistance is available as an optional extra.

What about charging? With the reveal of the ID.4, Volkswagen also shows off its new We Charge system that offers convenience, connectivity and sustainability which can be used at home, in town or on the long road. With this, using a direct current mains supply, the crossover can be charged to cover a range of 320 km in 30 minutes.
