After plenty of rumours and even a handful of blurry (apparently) leaked images, Volkswagen has confirmed that it will indeed reveal the facelifted Golf in November 2016.
In a short press release, the Wolfsburg-based automaker said that it planned to introduce a “major update” for its most successful model next month.
No other relevant details were offered, other than the fact that as many as 32 590 025 units of the most popular European car ever had been sold by the end of 2015. By VW’s maths, this means that, over the past 42 years, someone has bought a new Golf every 40 seconds.
So, what can we expect from this mid-cycle update, which VW has billed as an “extensive Golf update”? Well, any styling changes to the seventh-generation Golf are liable to be exceedingly subtle, and likely limited to understated tweaks to items such as the headlamps, tail-lamps, bumpers and alloy wheels.
The theme of low-key revisions will probably extend inside, too, with new infotainment options and increased connectivity set to be on offer (although there appears to be a chance of gesture control making its way into the Golf as well). Updated engines, too, are rumoured to be on the cards (with some reports even suggesting the addition of a mild hybrid powertrain).
But, for now, this is all mere conjecture. We’ll have to wait for the full reveal in November to learn more…
