The Volkswagen Talagon has been revealed as a spearhead for the brand’s SUV offensive, particularly in the Chinese market. The new seven-seater aims to be the perfect fusion of an SUV and MPV and will be available with three different powertrains. This production model is based on the SMV Concept shown in 2019.
Being the largest SUV based on the MQB Evo platform yet, how does the Volkswagen Talagon measure up against its siblings? VW says the SUV measures 5 152 mm long, 2 002 mm wide and 1 795 mm high with a wheelbase of 2 980 mm. This makes it 274 mm longer, 18 mm wider and 78 mm taller than the current Touareg with a wheelbase that is 86 mm more generous. Next to the Atlas (the largest SUV sold by VW in the North American region), the Volkswagen Talagon is 112 mm longer, 12 mm wider and 15 mm taller but the wheelbases are identical.
As for design, the brand says that the Volkswagen Talagon adopts a modern and unique look thanks to the lighting package which adds illuminated door handles, rails and rear logo. The large SUV also integrates the latest hardware and software to provide a more user-friendly driving experience. This includes the latest generation of the Innvision Cockpit with a free-floating design to provide a spacious feeling. For additional versatility, the Volkswagen Talagon can be had as a six- or seven-seater.
Volkswagen has not detailed the Talagon’s engine range but it has confirmed that the flagship will make use of the brand’s turbocharged 2,5-litre VR6 pushing 220 kW and 500 N.m of torque. This is mated to its latest DQ501 gearbox and 4Motion system in an aim to make it ideal for both in-city and off-road driving.
