While the Volkswagen Indaba was happening in the Eastern Cape with representatives from the German automaker’s African division divulging plans for South Africa and the rest of the continent, other events were unfolding elsewhere for the global market. During a staff meeting at the company’s Wolfsburg plant, CEO Thomas Schäfer unveiled the new model, confirming its place within a new lineup of small electric cars.
“With the conclusion of negotiations in December, we set the largest plan in Volkswagen’s history in motion,” Schäfer stated, highlighting the significance of this strategic move. The new entry-level EV, alongside the ID.2, will play a crucial role in Volkswagen’s ambition to rival EV giants like BYD and Tesla.
While the official name remains undisclosed, speculation suggests potential monikers like ID.1 or ID.EVERY1, following a recent trademark filing with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Based on the MEB Entry platform, the ID.2 is projected to achieve a range of up to 450 km. Volkswagen has also hinted at a future SUV variant within this entry-level EV series.
Inside, the vehicle will showcase a fresh design language, incorporating nostalgic elements from Volkswagen’s heritage. Notable features include “Classic” and “Vintage” driving modes, which will present driver displays reminiscent of the Beetle and Golf eras. The company aims to deliver a vehicle with the spaciousness of a Golf but at the affordability of a Polo.

The official unveiling of the concept car is imminent, with the production model slated for release in 2027. Volkswagen is investing heavily in its Wolfsburg plant to accommodate the production of these new entry-level EVs. Schäfer emphasized the plant’s continued importance, stating that it will “remain the heart of the Volkswagen brand in the electric age.” The facility will also be responsible for manufacturing the next-generation electric Golf on the new SSP platform, alongside the upcoming T-Roc EV.
Volkswagen has announced a target starting price of approximately €20 000 (approximately R386 062) for the entry-level EV, positioning it as a compelling option for budget-conscious consumers entering the electric vehicle market.
