Volkswagen has revealed the upgraded third-generation Touareg, solidifying its position as a top-tier premium SUV. The latest model boasts significant improvements in suspension, design, and technology, making it an attractive option for potential buyers.
Priced at roughly R1,4 million based on current exchange rates, pre-sales for the new Touareg will begin on May 25. The outgoing model in South Africa is listed at R1 365 100.
The design of the Touareg has been refined with a sharpened look, highlighted by new front and rear designs. Notable features include the illuminated rear logo and enhanced intuitive operation. The vehicle’s driving characteristics have also been elevated, ensuring optimal performance for various terrains and towing capabilities. Volkswagen continues to push technological boundaries with the Touareg, setting the stage for future models. The upgraded Touareg introduces innovative HD matrix headlights with over 38 000 interactive LEDs. This lighting system projects a precise light carpet onto the driving lane, offering unmatched visibility. The optional IQ. LIGHT HD matrix headlights feature a glare-free main beam, enhancing safety by masking the light for oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead.
The suspension of the Touareg has been enhanced to deliver maximum comfort and performance. The SUV is equipped with a roof load sensor integrated with the suspension electronics, allowing for early intervention by the Electronic Stability Control system. This ensures increased driving stability when a roof load is detected. Additional suspension options, such as active roll compensation and all-wheel steering, further enhance the driving dynamics of the Touareg.
Inside the cabin, the Touareg features the Innovision Cockpit as standard. The Innovision Cockpit offers lane-level navigation, high-resolution HD map data, and an improved voice control system. USB-C connections with a charging capacity of 45 watts have been added, enabling faster charging of electronic devices. The interior has also been refined based on customer feedback, with softer centre console trims for enhanced comfort. Optional systems such as “Travel Assist,” “Park Assist Plus with remote control,” “Trailer Assist,” and “Night Vision” offer further convenience and enhanced visibility during driving.

Customers have a wide range of powertrain options to choose from, including turbocharged petrol engines, turbodiesel engines, and plug-in hybrids. All powertrain variants come with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and the reliable 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive system. The pricing for the new Touareg models in Germany starts at €69 200 (R1 433 833) for the base version. The “Elegance” and “R-Line” exclusive lines are priced at €75 070 (R1 555 460) and €79 660 (R1 649 323), respectively. Positioned as the flagship model is the Touareg R eHybrid, developed by Volkswagen R, priced from €93 870 (R1 944 999). The Touareg R hybrid offers impressive performance with a combined system output of 340 kW and exclusive features that distinguish it as the high-performance variant.
