Yes, it’s that time again. Wörthersee 2019 has arrived, with Volkswagen apprentices from Wolfsburg unveiling their 279 kW Golf GTI Aurora show car on the shores of the famous lake in southern Austria.

The two-seater Golf GTI Aurora draws its urge from an evolution of VW’s familiar turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol engine, tuned to deliver 279 kW to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission.

The special GTI is painted in a combination of Nardo Grey and Deep Black Pearl Effect, with the apprentices also adding accents in a one-off Mint Green hue. Interestingly, the body kit (complete with a rear diffuser) was painted entirely by hand.

Inside, additional displays have been added to the centre console (showing the driver engine and vehicle data), while the front passenger can also follow along on a tablet device (which doubles as a control for the 3 500 watt sound system).

“The Wörthersee 2019 apprentice team equipped the Golf GTI Aurora with state-of-the-art technology,” said Christoph Görtz, director of vocational training in Wolfsburg.

“By taking part in the Golf GTI Wörthersee project, our apprentices gain wide-ranging and indeed interdisciplinary technical experience for their later careers,” Görtz added.

“The integration of complex digital applications in the vehicle is of utmost importance, as are keeping to a schedule and maintaining quality standards, co-ordinating with the specialists involved, presenting their results and finding creative solutions to technical challenges.”

The Golf Estate R 4Motion FighteR was also on revealed at the event, created by thirteen young apprentices from Zwickau. The estate gains a widebody kit, a rooftop lighting system and front strobe lights in the grille, while its TSI engine has been tweaked to offer 295 kW. The one-off model also boasts a glossy paint job in Crystal Silver and Nardo Grey, with accents in Misano Red and Piano Black.

Set to be used as a safety car during racing events on the Sachsenring, the FighteR features a 360° camera on its roof.

The R-badged wagon’s interior was also customised by the apprentices, with leather and Alcantara extending all the way to the luggage compartment. Furthermore, a sound system was custom-built for this one-off.
