Although the Toyota FJ Cruiser was created with off-road adventures in mind, a tuner in the Philippines has gone against the grain and modified it for on-road performance.

The Japanese firm’s retro-styled SUV gains a lowering kit, some distinctive body parts and an increase in power at the hands of Atoy Customs.

Bringing the FJ Cruiser 40 mm closer to the earth is a set of Kyb Xtage lowering springs, paired with Tein Endura Pro+ shock absorbers. The tuner has also added Falken STZ 275/65 R17 tyres, wrapped round Stealth Custom Series flowform alloy wheels. Furthermore, D1 Spec hub-centric wheel spacers have been fitted.

There’s also a carbon-fibre body kit, which includes a wider set of wheel arches and OEM-style mudguards, a spare-tyre delete with carbon accents, JAOS bonnet trim, a custom front chin with brake-duct vents and a custom rear diffuser. Staying true to its adventurous roots, the FJ has also gained a PIAA LP570 grille mount, LP270 foglamps and 6000k LED headlamps.

The cabin receives the custom treatment as well. Atoy Customs has carried out a highback seat conversion (with an armrest), while other new parts include a Greddy steering wheel, a basic sound setup by Jetcar Audio and a CAG OBD display.

And performance? Well, the FJ Cruiser’s naturally aspirated 4,0-litre V6 petrol engine gets an ECU tune from DTM Motorsport. Unfortunately, the company doesn’t state the resulting power at the flywheel.

Other alterations to the powertrain include AC long-tube headers, an AC Y-pipe with two bullet resonators plus a catback exhaust system using a Borla Atak Crate muffler and Borla Black chrome tips. There’s also an AFE GT momentum intake assembly, an AFE throttle body spacer and a Cusco cooling plate.
