New (SA-bound) BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: mass production kicks off…

BMW says mass production of its new 2 Series Gran Coupé has commenced in Leipzig.

Revealed in October 2019, the Munich-based firm’s fresh-faced four-door model is positioned as a rival to Mercedes-Benz’s CLA.

The F44-generation model is expected to launch in initial markets in March 2020. Unlike the rear-driven 2 Series Coupé, the four-door version runs on BMW’s front-wheel-drive architecture (shared with the new 1 Series), with the flagship M235i benefitting from an all-wheel-drive arrangement.

“We are proud to produce the new four-door coupé at the Leipzig plant for the entire world market. This new vehicle leads to a significant increase in volume,” said plant manager, Hans-Peter Kemser.

In addition to the 1 Series and the 2 Series Gran Coupé, the Leipzig factory also produces the 2 Series Coupé and Convertible, the M2 Competition and the 2 Series Active Tourer. In addition, the i8 (in both coupé and roadster form) and the electric i3 are built at the plant.
