The new, boldly styled Peugeot 2008 has been revealed, boasting three powertrain options: petrol, diesel and all-electric.
Running on the PSA Group’s latest Common Modular Platform, the second-generation 2008 measures 4 300 mm long, (up a whopping 140 mm on its predecessor), 1 770 mm wide and 1 530 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 650 mm. Peugeot claims a boot volume of 360 litres, regardless of powertrain.
The new version of the French crossover will be offered (in Europe, at least) with a range of petrol and diesel engines. In early 2020, the battery electric e-2008 variant will join the line-up.
The latter is powered by a 100 kW/260 N.m electric motor mated to a 50 kWh battery (sited under the floor). Under the latest WLTP regulations, Peugeot says the zero-emissions SUV will offer a range of 310 km. Capable of supporting 100 kW rapid charging technology, an 80 percent charge will take 30 minutes, says Peugeot, while a full charge using conventional 7,4 kW and 11 kW fast chargers will take “between eight hours and five hours”.
So, what about the conventional combustion-engined models? Well, the brand’s familiar turbocharged, 1,2-litre three-cylinder “PureTech” petrol engine will be offered in three states of tune (75 kW/205 N.m, 96 kW/230 N.m and 114 kW/240 N.m). The base version will ship standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, while an eight-speed automatic transmission will be offered on the mid-tier variant (and come standard on the flagship petrol model).
In addition, the range will include a 1,5-litre turbodiesel model, offering 74 kW/250 N.m in the case of the manual and 96 kW/250 N.m in the case of the eight-speed auto.
Inside, you’ll find the latest version of the firm’s so-called “3D i-Cockpit”, complete with the trademark compact steering wheel and a new head-up display. The centre console features a 10-inch colour touchscreen (depending on the trim level, of course), with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Peugeot South Africa says the new 2008 will “probably” arrive in SA at some point in 2020, although it has yet to nail down an official date.
