A fresh report out of Japan claims the long-rumoured GR Corolla hot hatch will be more road-biased than the rally-bred GR Yaris.
According to BestCarWeb, the new GR Corolla will be available in both five-door hatchback and wagon form, offering more practicality than the smaller, three-door GR Yaris.
The Japanese publication claims the GR Corolla will thus offer improved “rear-seat comfort” and a “large” luggage compartment.
The biggest departure from the GR Yaris formula, however, is expected to come in the form of chassis tuning. BestCarWeb says the hot Corolla will be positioned as a “more casual” hatchback than the GR Yaris, with an emphasis on “on-road” (rather than rally-like) performance.
Still, the GR Corolla looks likely to inherit the turbocharged 1,6-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine from the GR Yaris, which boasts 200 kW and 370 N.m in JDM-spec guise. The all-wheel-drive system and six-speed manual gearbox will seemingly carry over as well.
BestCarWeb suggests the GR Corolla hot hatch will be positioned to do battle against the 180 kW Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI, with the GR Corolla Touring conceived to take on the upcoming Golf 8 R Variant.
At the end of April 2020, Toyota South Africa Motors said it would “very much like” to add a high-performance GR-badged Corolla to its line-up but pointed out such a model had yet to be confirmed.
