The new Toyota Hilux GR-Sport flagship double-cab bakkie has arrived in South Africa in limited numbers and CARmag.co.za has local pricing ahead of the official market launch.
The newcomer is based on the existing 2,8 GD-6 4×4 6AT double-cab derivative. Just 535 units of this bakkie have been set aside for the South African market, as announced in February 2019.
So, how much are we looking at here? Well, the Hilux GR-Sport will be priced at R707 400 (that’s some R69 900 more than the model on which it is based).

Under the skin, the limited-edition bakkie gains “special off-road-biased suspension”, which the Japanese firm says affords it “even greater off-the-beaten-track prowess”. The suspension updates include hardened front springs and the addition of double-tube dampers. The latter work together with “specifically selected” valves to result in a “tailored damping curve to enhance driver control” and “increase confidence” during high-speed driving on gravel roads.
The Hilux GR-Sport also features special “Gazoo Racing” decals, a unique grille design (complete with “Toyota” lettering), a two-tone colour scheme, a black styling bar, chunky running boards and model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels (wrapped in 265/65 all-terrain rubber).
In addition, Toyota says it boasts “tailored interior treatment”. For reference, the Brazilian-spec model features perforated leather with red stitching, as well as various Gazoo Racing details, including a start button, GR-branded floor mats, a numbered interior plate and a GR logo on the front headrests. It’s likely a similar arrangement will be offered here.
From what we understand, no under-bonnet changes have been made, which means the Hilux GR-Sport employs the standard 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, sending 130 kW and 450 N.m to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
