A fresh report out of Australia claims the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 could be offered with a V8 engine after all, although it will likely be petrol flavoured.
While earlier reports suggested the replacement for the Land Cruiser 200 would ditch both the 4,5-litre turbodiesel V8 offered in South Africa and the 4,6-litre petrol V8 sold in some other markets, motoring.com.au now claims to have come across new information suggesting a powerplant with eight cylinders is indeed on the cards.
According to the publication, a source “with knowledge” of the next-generation model has confirmed a petrol-flavoured V8 is “not out of the question”. The report furthermore speculates the eight-cylinder engine could come in the form of a detuned version of a twin-turbo unit developed by Lexus, displacing between 3,8 and 4,0 litres.
The new Land Cruiser 300 is expected to hit the market in Japan in April 2021, initially powered by a new 3,3-litre V6 turbodiesel engine (which rumours suggest will eventually be used in the upcoming GR Hilux, too).
The oil-burning powerplant is tipped to be joined by a twin-turbo 3,5-litre V6 petrol engine (depending on the market, of course), with an electrified version of the latter likely to follow at a later stage.
