As yet another piece of forbidden fruit for South African bakkie fans, Toyota’s US division has released the first official image of its latest-generation Tundra pick-up – which competes with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500.
Although it’s unlikely to ever come to South Africa, it’s also not impossible given that a right-hand drive version is reportedly under consideration for Australia. However, regardless of that the new Toyota Tundra does show the way forward for Toyota’s bakkie design language, which means it’s very likely that what you see here holds at least a few clues to the next-generation Hilux, which is expected to hit the scene by around 2024.
Toyota hasn’t disclosed any significant information on the new Tundra, however it is expected that the full-sized pick-up will be built around the new TNGA-F architecture, which underpins the new Land Cruiser 300. Given Toyota’s shift towards global platforms based around TNGA, it’s also more than likely that this platform will underpin the next-generation Hilux in one form or another. But just how much of the tech will filter down to the smaller bakkie remains to be seen. Interestingly, the Tundra is expected to offer coil-spring rear suspension for the first time, CarAdvice reports, which could certainly be an option for the more luxurious Hilux variants given that Nissan’s Navara has already gone this route.
As for the engines, it is expected that the new Tundra will inherit the 305 kW Lexus-built 3,5-litre V8 turbopetrol that has also found its way into the LC 300. It has also been speculated that this engine could find its way into the GR version of the next Hilux, along with the new 3,3 V6 turbodiesel.
