New Volkswagen Golf 8 R filmed being thrashed (but it sounds quite tame)

By: Ryan Bubear

Fresh footage of the yet-to-be-revealed Volkswagen Golf 8 R testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife has emerged online, although the hot hatch sounds rather subdued.

Auto Addiction posted the short clip on YouTube, showing the white Golf 8 R prototype blasting round the ‘Ring.

While the all-paw hot hatch looks pretty quick on track, there’s very little engine or exhaust sound (the audio is dominated by squealing tyres). Could the petrol particulate filter required under the latest WLTP regulations be stifling the latest Golf R’s soundtrack?

Regardless, expect the new Golf R to again feature a high-output version of the Wolfsburg-based firm’s familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine (with 245 kW, according to an earlier leak).
