The automotive industry is awash with promises and claims from manufacturers like Nissan, who hopes to achieve carbon neutrality and electrification as early as 2030, writes Ryan de Villiers.
While some have a more conservative approach to this abandonment of the cherished internal combustion engine, Nissan has taken an aggressive approach to usher out its ICEs.
The firm has said that it seeks to have a completely electric lineup by the end of this decade. Moreover, there have also been whispers of the firm ceasing ICE model production within Europe from 2023 which is in line with their desire to have all new vehicles within markets such as Japan, Europe, and America to be fully electric by as early as 2030. A short video was released by the Nissan Europe YouTube channel detailing the history of the Japanese firm’s experience with electric cars and outlining their intention going forward.
It was also declared that Nissan plans to launch 23 new electrified models by 2030 havingpresented five electric vehicles coming to Europe in due course.
The video remarks, “A new era for sustainable mobility has dawned with Ariya leading the way.” According to the video, the Ariya is poised as the firm’s upcoming leading EV and in the video is presented alongside the 2022 Juke HEV, Qashqai e-Power, X-Trail e-Power, Leaf, and electric Townstar. These new additions will feature the firm’s e-Power powertrain system that mimics the experience of a fully electric car.
Last year, Nissan joined the “Race to Zero” initiative which aided the company’s efforts towards electrification and furthered it in their journey to carbon neutrality. The “Race to Zero” campaign is an agreement between businesses, countries, investors, etc that is led by the United Nations to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Nissan has a slew of programs in place that fall within the same category as the “Race to Zero” campaign such as Nissan’s EV36Zero campaign. Essentially, EV36Zero is the firm’s new manufacturing blueprint that combines various aspects of their electric vehicles to streamline manufacturing and increase efficiency.
