The oil price at the time of writing is $95 per barrel, which has risen since our last report. Fuel prices rising has a snowball effect on transport and food costs, with some South Africans now having to choose between groceries and fuel, affecting their livelihoods and work. It will likely also impact travel decisions during the festive season, potentially lowering much needed tourism income. Consequently, in a bid to make the government cut the General Fuel Levy (GFL) and lower petrol prices, a group called Concerned Citizens of South Africa is advocating for a national shutdown on 19 October.
