The Aston Martin DBX, the marque’s debut SUV, has already captured attention for its blend of sophistication, performance, and luxury. With the market trend favouring off-road-capable vehicles, the Gaydon-based automaker is reportedly exploring the viability of introducing a premium, all-terrain model. Yet, to contend with icons such as the Defender and G-Class, Aston Martin recognises the need for strategic upgrades to its DBX.
Autocar reports that the company’s chairman, Lawrence Stroll, is cautious, insisting on a robust business case before greenlighting the project. Nonetheless, the brand draws inspiration not only from the success of the DBX, the firm’s sales frontrunner. Should “Project Rambo” proceed, however, expect significant enhancements to the DBX’s underpinnings. A beefed-up adaptive air suspension system promises improved capability across varied terrains. Critical to its off-road prowess will be enhanced ground clearance, potentially augmented with all-terrain tyres and skid plates for added protection.

The powertrain remains a point of intrigue. While the DBX’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 could suffice, a true off-roader demands more than mere all-wheel drive. Speculation swirls around the possibility of hybridisation, offering benefits such as enhanced power and torque, and efficiency. However, concrete details are scarce at this stage.
Reports suggest “Project Rambo” won’t be a mass-market endeavour, with production anticipated to be limited to around 2 500 units, ensuring exclusivity and setting the stage for a bespoke creation. As for production, Aston has yet to confirm a location, but the DBX factory in St Athan makes sense, given the shared platform potential between the two SUVs.
