The Superboss is not just any Kadett; it represents a pinnacle of performance and engineering that captured the hearts of South African car enthusiasts many years ago. Before the Superboss, the Kadett lineup already included several notable performance models. The journey began with the 2.0-litre SOHC 8V GSi, known as the Boss, which laid the groundwork for its more powerful successors. The introduction of the DOHC 16V variant, dubbed the Big Boss, further cemented the Kadett’s reputation for spirited driving dynamics.
Opel elevated this performance pedigree with the Superboss by refining the already potent C20XE engine, a 2.0L DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder unit originally producing 115 kW. Enhancements included a Cosworth-designed cylinder head, 276-degree Schrick cams, sodium-filled valves, forged pistons, and increased compression. Complemented by Bosch Motronic fuel injection, a revised intake, a 4-to-1 exhaust manifold leading into a free-flow system, and a Promotec ECU chip, these modifications boosted the engine’s output to a formidable 125 kW and 228 N.m of torque.

Crucially, the Superboss also featured a bespoke limited-slip differential, this component was essential in effectively transmitting the increased power to the road, making the Superboss a formidable competitor on both the street and the track.
This historical gem recently surfaced at an Iron Lion Customs auction, a renowned event celebrated for its diverse array of vehicles, from timeless classics to contemporary modified marvels. The lineup at this year’s auction was particularly impressive, featuring icons such as a 1998 Nissan Skyline R34, a 1968 Pontiac Firebird 350, and a 1988 BMW 325i. However, it was the Opel Kadett GSi 16V S that drew significant attention. With just 40 997 km on the clock, this pristine Superboss commanded a final hammer price of R450 000, which, with commission, brought the total to R505 000. Given the vehicle’s limited production run and its iconic status, the price reflects the growing demand and appreciation among collectors for such a well-preserved example.
Despite an engine light indicating a potential issue, the vehicle was listed as a runner, and its exterior condition was noted to be in excellent shape. The sale of this Opel Kadett GSi 16V S at this price further underscores its significance in South African automotive history and highlights the enduring legacy of the Superboss among performance car aficionados.
