The iconic Opel Manta sports coupe of the early 1970s has been recreated for the 21st century as a one-off restomod with battery power.
Although its basic body shell has been retained, in true restomod style the new Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD has been infused with many modern design touches inside and out.
At the front end, the old Manta’s grille makes way for Opel’s modern ‘Pixel-Visor’ face that includes a screen with round lights hidden behind it and a modern LED daytime running light signature.
Opel has kept things more traditional at the rear end, although the stunning circular taillights now boast a 3D LED design. The paintwork honours the Manta’s heritage with a yellow and black combination, while the 17-inch alloy wheels add a modern touch.
It’s all revolution beneath the bonnet, with Opel having replaced the original Manta’s four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor that produces 108 kW and 225 N.m. The four-speed manual gearbox has been retained, but drivers can engage fourth gear and drive automatically. The motor is fed by a 31 kWh lithium-ion battery that allows for a claimed range of around 200 km.
The cabin also takes a completely modern approach and although the steering wheel resembles the one found in the original Opel Manta, the traditional instruments have been replaced by a wide screen that stretches into the middle section of the dashboard. This ‘Pure Panel’, as Opel calls it, combines a pair of 12-inch and 10-inch digital displays.
A Marshall sound system adds a further modern touch, as do the sports seats with a yellow centre line to match the cabin accents and exterior colour.
“The new Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD reflects the growing trend of transforming classic cars like the Manta into so-called ‘RestoMods’ with modern components and powertrains,” Opel enthused.
“The all-electric Manta GSe is the first electric RestoMod by Opel and combines the classic style of the iconic Manta with the latest electric powertrain for sustainable motoring.”
