Continued supply chain woes are a struggle for the automotive industry, however that didn’t stop certain manufacturers from having a rather impressive first quarter of 2022.
Volkswagen managed to amass a not-insignificant 16 472 sales in the first three months of this year with the sales if certain models such as the T-Cross enjoying a 6% increase when compared to the same period in 2021.
In the first three months of 2022, Volkswagen’s Kariega plant has manufactured over 30 000 Polo’s, a remarkable display yet again of our local manufacturing capabilities.
Steffen Knapp, Head of Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, “The Volkswagen brand (including Commercial Vehicles) sold 16 472 vehicles in the local market in the first three months of this year. The global supply challenges continue to have an adverse effect on our brand and affected the availability of models like the Tiguan and Golf which are strong performers in our market.”
Knapp adds, “The Polo Vivo and Polo continued to post strong sales in the A0 Hatch segment. The T-Cross is not only leading the A0 SUV segment, but sales have also increased by six percent when compared to the first three months of 2021.”
Of the vehicles sold by Volkswagen in Q1 2022, 5 124 of them were Polo Vivo’s, 4 071 were Polo’s and 2 473 of them were T-Crosses. The Polo Sedan made up for a respectable 2 074 units and the T-Roc 703 units.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles sold 1 421 units in Q1 2022 with the Amarok double cab bakkie and T6.1 making up for the majority of those numbers.
In conclusion, Knapp noted, “We remain confident that our upcoming launches of the new Tiguan Allspace, all-new Taigo, new T-Roc and all-new Polo Sedan will strengthen Volkswagen’s performance in the local passenger car market for the remainder of 2022.”
