Refreshed Volkswagen Tiguan inherits Golf 8 GTI’s 180 kW engine…

Volkswagen in the United Kingdom has handed the refreshed Tiguan the 180 kW engine from the Golf 8 GTI.

The new derivative (which joins the range along with a fresh 140 kW version) slots in below the upcoming 235 kW Tiguan R, while also benefiting from the German firm’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

The turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol unit generates 370 N.m, on tap between 1 500 and 4 300 r/min. The result, according to the Wolfsburg-based company, is a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 6,0 seconds and a top speed of 229 km/h.

In the UK, the 180 kW version of the Tiguan is offered exclusively in R-Line specification.

Of course, the pre-facelift Tiguan line-up still offered here in South Africa includes an effectively GTI-powered derivative, too, though that 2,0 TSI 4Motion variant offers the 162 kW output of the (also pre-facelift) Golf 7 GTI.

As a reminder, the refreshed Tiguan is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2021, though VW SA has yet to confirm the engine line-up. The new Tiguan R, meanwhile, is tipped to touch down on local soil either late in 2021 or early in 2022.
