Renault announced last night that it would bring its cut-price Renault Duster crossover/SUV to South Africa within the next six months.
The Duster is sold in Europe with the Dacia badge (as is the Sandero), but recently went into production in India in right-hand drive form as a Renault, and has now been confirmed for South African introduction. Local models will be sourced from India.
In a conversation with CAR, outgoing Renault SA chief Xavier Gobille revealed that the Duster will be sold in South Africa in petrol and diesel forms, and with the option of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. He also added that the price would be, "a killer for the competition".
Though unconfirmed, we suspect the Duster will reach South Africa in 1,6-litre petrol and 1,5-litre turbodiesel variants. No automatic version will be offered. We expect all local models to feature five-speed manual transmissions.
The Duster is an affordable crossover vehicle, likely to be priced well below R200 000.
