You get limited production rarity and then you get totally bespoke, and nothing embodies the latter quite like a coachbuilt car that was created to the owner’s exacting desires.
Rolls Royce will soon be fully catering for well-heeled buyers that want to make their dream cars a reality. The British luxury car maker announced on Thursday that coachbuilding would become a permanent fixture in its portfolio.
To celebrate this new dawn, Rolls Royce has revealed a new coachbuilt creation called the Boat Tail, which was designed to blend previously unseen levels of sculpture with sometimes “playful” functionality. With a rumoured price tag of 20 million pounds (R391 million).
To that end the Rolls Royce Boat Tail has a ‘hosting suite’ built into the boot area, which houses champagne, flutes and all the utensils you’ll need for a picnic. But it’s as much about theatrics as it is about functionality as this rear deck contraption opens in a sweeping butterfly gesture at the push of a button.
“Hinged towards the centre line, the synchronised balletic opening movement reveals a treasure chest of moving parts that offer themselves to the host at a precise angle of 15 degrees,” Rolls Royce says.
“This subtle gesture of presentation reflects a genteel and quintessentially British expression of service.”
We could not have worded that more eloquently ourselves.
The Boat Tail was commissioned by a couple who desired a purposefully self-indulgent car that celebrates a life of hard work and success. Featuring a unique, nautically-inspired exterior design, the vehicle measures a considerable 5.8 metres in length. The nautical theme continues in the cabin with open-pore wood grain that’s visually elongated by stainless steel pinstripe inlays, while the lower cabin and floor area are finished in wood to resemble a hull. The cabin is also adorned with a completely unique Bovet 1822 timepiece that was specifically commissioned for this car.
“Rolls-Royce Coachbuild clients are intimately and personally involved at each step of the creative and engineering process,” Rolls Royce said.
“We work in harmony with the client to gain complete fluency in the nuances of their character and personality. We carefully translate these qualities into the elements with which they wish to imbue their commission.”
