Set to cease production, this V8 engine has been a defining feature of the Land Cruiser’s robust performance and off-road prowess.
For 2024, a new era dawns as Toyota introduces a 2,8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, shared with the Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado, as the replacement. Despite being smaller in displacement, this four-cylinder marvel churns out more torque while boasting greater fuel efficiency compared to the revered 4,5-litre turbo-diesel V8.
Toyota assures enthusiasts that the Land Cruiser 70 Series remains a force to be reckoned with, yet sadly, this affirmation could very well exclude the turbo-diesel V8. According to Cars.co.za the 1VD-FTV 4,5-litre engine will bid adieu first from the 76 Series wagon in August 2024, with the single-cab and dual-cab models following suit in August 2025. As for the vintage 4,0-litre petrol V6 and 4,2-litre diesel inline-six engines in other markets, their fate remains uncertain with no discontinuation date yet.

The V8 engine has etched its legacy, but speculation arises regarding Toyota’s strategic move. Opting for a more efficient four-cylinder engine aligns with the shifting automotive landscape, emphasizing fuel economy and reduced emissions. This transition potentially positions Toyota to meet evolving environmental standards while catering to modern consumer demands.
Enthusiasts and fans of the Land Cruiser may find solace in the new engine’s torque prowess and improved efficiency, enhancing the vehicle’s off-road capabilities. Toyota’s decision not only reflects adaptability but also a forward-thinking approach to sustainability.
As the iconic Land Cruiser 70 Series bids farewell to its diesel V8 chapter, it marks a milestone in its illustrious history. Toyota’s pursuit of innovation and environmental consciousness appears poised to drive the Land Cruiser towards a greener, more efficient future while continuing to captivate adventure seekers and off-road enthusiasts alike.
