A fresh report claims BMW will end production of its M2 Competition in Europe earlier than initially planned.

According to BimmerToday, the Munich-based firm will stop building the M2 Competition (as well as the limited-edition M2 CS) before the end of 2020.

The reason? Well, the report cites Europe’s increasingly stringent emissions regulations, which will also likely see production of the V12-powered M760Li end before 2020 is over. Interestingly, the publication also suggests the F87-generation M2 Competition will still be available for order in markets outside of Europe “for a little longer”.

Of course, a new model is still some way off, based on the next-generation 2 Series coupé, which is tipped to again employ a rear-wheel-drive platform rather than the front-driven underpinnings employed by the new 2 Series Gran Coupé.

A report from March 2020 suggested the G87-gen M2 would hit the market in 2022, powered by a detuned version of the turbocharged 3,0-litre inline-six already employed by the X3 M and X4 M (and set to be rolled out to the new M3 and M4 soon).

As a reminder, the current M2 Competition is offered locally in both manual (R1 007 664) and dual-clutch (R1 061 956) form, with its turbocharged inline-six offering the rear axle 302 kW and 550 N.m.
