GWM made an audacious move on the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger with the launch of its P-Series one-tonner in 2020. Now it seems that the Chinese carmaker is looking to take the fight to American pick-ups like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado.
Citing Chinese media reports, Australian website CarAdvice says that this large-and-in-charge GWM is looking set to be revealed later in April. Although it is known to be on the “wish list” for the Aussie division, it’s still too early to say whether it would ever be destined for South Africa as demand for larger bakkies remains unproven.
The Australian publication reports that the new GWM contender is expected to be offered with a 3,0-litre engine that pairs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive system. The engine is rumoured to produce around 260 kW and 750 N.m of torque, although other details remain unclear at this stage.
If the rumours of this bigger GWM are true, could this mean that the Chinese company is planning to enter the lucrative but cut-throat US market? Competing against the big Ford would be a tall order given its established dominance in that country, with over 200 000 units having been sold in the first three months of 2021 alone.
