The head of BMW’s M division has confirmed the German brand has no plans to build a full-fat Z4 M, suggesting such a project would have simply cost too much to be viable.
Speaking to CarAdvice, Markus Flasch said the the roadster “already is a true M car”.
"We thought about something like [a Z4 M], however the Z4 M40i as we have it currently has so much performance that it even gets close to an M2," Flasch told the Australian publication.
"The Z4 already is a true M car – very competent, very fast. Putting in the different engine in a small car as the Z4, putting in a bigger engine, means a lot of effort. So far, we have not found a way this project would make sense," he explained.
In South Africa, the new Z4 is offered in base sDrive20i guise (with 145 kW and 320 N.m from its 2,0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine) and flagship M40i form (with 250 kW and 500 N.m from its 3,0-litre, straight-six turbocharged petrol unit).
