A Hyundai micro-crossover is confirmed to be on the timeline for the South Korean manufacturer in an attempt to tackle the likes of the competitive Suzuki Ignis and Renault Sandero Stepway. It is understood that this new product will bear the “Casper” moniker.
As per Autocar India, this new Hyundai micro-crossover, currently codenamed AX1, will be entering production this September and will debut in its local Korean market. A leaked document reveals that this car will be powered by a choice of a naturally aspirated or turbocharged 1,0-litre petrol engine. In the free-breathing model, a power figure of 56 kW is claimed while the TGDI unit will offer 74 kW. This is the same engine currently found in the Venue. Both cars may be offered with the brand’s four-speed automatic transmission.
Within its range, this Hyundai micro-crossover will be the entry-level offering of its high-riding catalogue, meaning this will slot in directly under the aforementioned Venue. The new product will be based on the firm’s K1 compact car platform which currently underpins the Grand i10. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the Hyundai micro-crossover will be 3 595mm long, 1 595mm wide and 1 575mm tall.
Based on recent spy footage, it’s assumed that the new model will offer key external equipment such as circular LED headlamps with DRLs, triangular cues on the LED taillamps and an overall boxy and upright body design.
We can expect to see an official reveal of the Hyundai micro-crossover in South Korea next month right before it enters production. As mentioned, it will launch in that region at first but a global expansion will commence shortly after.
