The head of Mercedes-AMG has hinted the turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine used in the A45 and CLA45 will make its way into larger models, too.
Speaking to Paultan.org, Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers hinted the world’s most powerful series production four-cylinder engine would also be employed in a longitudinal configuration (as opposed to being transversely mounted in the case of Mercedes-Benz’s compact cars).
“The reason is that we’re going to use that engine for further applications which are not necessarily east-west applications,” Moers said.
As the publication points out, the M139 engine could thus be earmarked for use in larger, rear-driven vehicles, possibly even with some sort of electrification.
As a reminder, the new engine generates 310 kW (at 6 750 r/min) and 500 N.m in the A45 S (while in the standard A45 it churns out 285 kW and 480 N.m), sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. That’s enough, says the Affalterbach-based performance division, for a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 3,9 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h.
