A new report out of the UK has suggested that the upcoming Mercedes-AMG E63 will use a hybridised turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine option much like the soon-to- be-revealed C63. Furthermore, hints about the entire W214 generation saloon have been detailed.
According to information sourced by Autocar, officials have hinted that the twin-turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 unit will no longer be used in the Mercedes-AMG E63.Taking its place up-front will be an emotive turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder M139 unit with the support of a plug-in hybrid system for a total output of up to 447 kW.
The next-generation E-Class will focus on technology and refinement and introduce a more advanced electric architecture. With this, the sedan will support level three autonomous driving capabilities where allowed, together with 5G connectivity for high-speed over-the-air software updates.
We can expect the next Mercedes-Benz E-Class to adopt a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link suspension setup with the option of air suspension and rear-wheel steering. The wheelbase will also be elongated with an increase in the rear track to maximise interior space. Additional engine options will include the existing M254 four-cylinder petrol and OM654 four-cylinder diesel units with a starter-generator and 48V electrical system.
The turbocharged 2,9-litre in-line six-cylinder M256 petrol and turbodiesel 3,0-litre in-line six-cylinder OM656 units are said to receive similar upgrades and will be offered with both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid functionalities. All plug-in hybrid versions are set to receive a 28,6 kWh battery.
