The Mercedes-Benz X-Class was officially revealed in July 2017 and since its official launch it has sold 15 300 units worldwide. Owing to these weak sales figures, the brand has reportedly decided to end production of its Nissan Navara-based double cab bakkie come May this year.
According to an unnamed source at Mercedes-Benz, Auto Motor Sport a recent product review by Mercedes-Benz has identified the X-Class as a niche product that’s only managed to find tenuous footholds on the Australian and South African markets. Consequently, as of May, the Navara-based bakkie will no longer roll off the assembly line at Nissan’s Barcelona plant.
Great emphasis has been placed on the fact that the X-Class has sold just 15 300 units since launch – a figure that’s far adrift of the Navara’s 66 000 unit sales over the first half of 2019. This development comes as a further blow to Mercedes-Benz’s commercial division, which saw a loss of €2,4 billion (R39 billion) in 2019.
