Mitsubishi Pajero to live on after all? New model tipped for 2021…

While the future of the Mitsubishi Pajero nameplate has long been up in the air, a fresh report from Japan claims a new-generation model will be released in 2021.

According to a report on Spyder7 (which we came across thanks to the studious folks over at CarsGuide), the fifth-generation Pajero is scheduled to hit initial markets either in late 2021 or early in 2022.

In 2019, Mitsubishi announced the Pajero nameplate would be discontinued in its domestic market of Japan, launching a “Final Edition” model to see off the 37-year-old badge. The SUV has, however, soldiered on in other markets, including here in South Africa where it was last updated in October 2014.

The fresh information published by Spyder7 suggests the new Pajero will draw its urge from a hybrid powertrain comprising a 2,4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a pair of electric motors. The hybrid arrangement (a version of which is already employed by the Outlander PHEV) is tipped to offer an all-electric driving range of 75 km.

According to the report, the new Pajero will ride on a “latest generation” ladder-frame chassis, with Mitsubishi set to stretch the wheelbase while maintaining the vehicle’s overall length. Earlier reports out of Australia claimed the Pajero could share its platform with the next-generation Nissan Patrol.

In South Africa, the Pajero range currently comprises a three-door GLS derivative and a five-door GLS Exceed variant, priced at R709 995 and R799 995 respectively.
