New Toyota GR 86: leak confirms 2021 debut; report claims 190 kW output

A leaked presentation slide published on social media has seemingly confirmed the new Toyota GR 86 is scheduled to debut towards the middle of 2021.

The slide uploaded to Instagram by @allcarnews shows the second-generation 86, which is expected to be rebranded as the GR 86 under the Gazoo Racing banner, is due in the (northern hemisphere) summer of 2021.

According to the post (embedded below), the new GR 86 will offer 190 kW from its turbocharged engine, again directed to the rear axle.

Earlier reports claimed the new version, which will again be developed alongside the Subaru BRZ, would employ either a Subaru-sourced turbocharged 2,4-litre engine or the same automaker’s upcoming turbocharged 1,8-litre flat-four unit.

Interestingly, though, the peak power output mentioned above would leave the new GR 86 matching the entry-level 2,0-litre, four-cylinder Supra offered in some markets.

In September 2019, Toyota and Subaru announced a new “business and capital alliance”, which includes the Japanese firms jointly developing follow-ups to the 86 and BRZ. This came after reports out of Japan suggested the two sportscars were facing the axe.

The Toyota GT86 line-up in South Africa currently comprises just a single derivative, priced at R632 200. The BRZ, meanwhile, was pulled from the local market back in September 2015.
