New Volkswagen Arteon R: peak power and torque figures revealed?

By: CAR magazine

A new report claims the upcoming Volkswagen Arteon R will employ the same EA888 engine set to feature in the Golf 8 R.

According to Autocar, the new Arteon R flagship will be revealed as part of the swoopy fastback’s facelift later in 2020, with oomph coming from the VW Group’s familiar turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder engine (rather than a six-cylinder unit).

The Wolfsburg-based firm is in the process of expanding its R portfolio, with the outgoing Golf 7 R recently joined by the T-Roc R and the Touareg R (the latter seemingly destined for European markets only).

Citing “details revealed at a recent Volkswagen dealer presentation in Germany”, the report suggests the R-badged Arteon will make 242 kW and 450 N.m from its forced-induction four-pot (an earlier leak pointed towards the Golf 8 R offering 245 kW), delivered to all four corners via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

As a reminder, the standard Arteon 2,0 TSI 4Motion – which is the single variant on offer in South Africa after the discontinuation of the diesel derivatives – generates 206 kW and 350 N.m.

Autocar furthermore reports the Arteon R’s all-paw arrangement will be revised to be more rear-biased than the current set-up. Interestingly, the British publication also says the Arteon R will be offered in shooting brake guise, with the new body style set to be unveiled in 2021.
