A fresh report out of Germany suggests the next-generation Mercedes-AMG C63 will ditch its V8 in favour of an electrified four-cylinder generating 389 kW.
According to the folks over at JESMB, the third-generation C63 will employ an electrified version of Affalterbach’s latest turbocharged 2,0-litre four-pot, the very same M139 unit that debuted in the A45, CLA45 and GLA45.
This, of course, lines up neatly with an earlier report from October 2019, which furthermore said the C63 would feature all-wheel drive as standard. What this latest story adds, however, is the electric motor will be sited on the rear axle rather than squeezed between the petrol engine and nine-speed automatic transmission.
The publication also claims the standard C63 will offer about 355 kW, while the flagship C63 S will generate 389 kW (eclipsing the current model’s 375 kW). We expect sedan, coupé and cabriolet body styles to again be available.
In addition, JESMB says a new C43 is on the cards, employing the same four-pot (sans electrification) tuned to deliver 289 kW in place of the current model’s turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 engine. There’s every chance, however, this variant will be actually end up featuring the C53 badge, targeting the likes of the Audi S4 and BMW M340i xDrive.
