The next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster may be going full electric in 2024 as the German manufacturer further displays its dedication to electrification. This decision may be executed to further deviate the smaller sportscar away from the 911, which is expected to remain an ICE for as long as possible.
According to a report by Car and Driver, the next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster badge will remain but the product will be vastly different. The bodystyle of the two models will stay the same as the current models but where design is concerned, the will be more in line with the Taycan philosophy.
It has been explained that the Mission R concept car is essentially a precursor for the next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster but without the conclusive aerodynamic panels. The Boxster is also expected to retain its canvas roof.
Details regarding the interior are limited but it’s been told that the next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster will inherit a user interface that places a strong focus on the Chinese market. With this, the brand claims that the upcoming model will be the most modern Porsche yet.
Where kerb mass is concerned, it’s believed that Porsche is working hard to keep things as light as possible with the brand targeting a figure of 1 655 kg. It hopes to achieve this by using a newly developed sportscar platform that is essentially a shortened version of the PPE.
Power and range has also not been detailed for the next-generation Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster but the manufacturer hints that they will be in line with the current models. The entry-lever offering will still significantly undercut the 911 in terms of price and retain its rear-wheel drive layout with a single-speed drive. A hybrid petrol-electric alternative for the next model has also been ruled out.
