The upcoming mid-cycle facelift for the 2024 Porsche 911, internally referred to as “992.2,” is set to bring significant changes to the model’s powertrain lineup. Rumours suggest that a new 3,6-liter flat-six engine will replace existing ones, with variations including naturally aspirated (NA) and twin-turbo configurations.

The 911 GTS is expected to adopt the NA setup with a mild-hybrid system, a departure from its current twin-turbo 3,0-liter engine. Meanwhile, Turbo models are downsizing from 3,8 to 3,6-liters but retaining the twin-turbo setup. The GT3 will keep its naturally aspirated 4,0-liter engine with a slight power increase. An electrified 911 is confirmed, featuring a hybrid setup without plug-in capabilities, utilizing regenerative braking and a small 2,0-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

The hybrid system is based on a revised twin-turbo 3,0-liter flat-six, rumoured to produce 290 kW and 470 N.m, with an additional electric motor for a total output of around 350 kW and 644 N.m. Another hybrid variant with 388 kW is speculated, and the flagship GT2 RS might also adopt a hybrid configuration with up to 588 kW. It’s important to approach these rumours with caution, but Porsche has confirmed the 911’s move towards hybridization in the near future, with a fully electric model expected after this decade.
