Renault’s design boss has suggested the future of the Mégane hatchback is uncertain as the French firm turns its focus (and development budget) towards electric vehicles.
Speaking to Auto Express, Renault head of design Laurens van den Acker said the Mégane was playing in a shrinking segment.
“Inevitably, once we’re starting to add a range of EVs to our line-up, some of the other vehicles are going to have to go because we just can’t afford to develop all of this at the same time,” Van den Acker told the publication.
“The Mégane is in a segment that’s increasingly under pressure. You have to put your money where the future of the market is,” he added.
The midsize hatchback first arrived on the scene in 1995 and is currently in its fourth generation. In South Africa, the range comprises five variants, including the RS280 Lux and RS280 Cup hot hatches (with the Trophy still on the way).
