RIP, Ford Fusion: production of Blue Oval brand’s sedan is set to end

By: CAR magazine

Remember the Ford Fusion? Well, while it was discontinued in South Africa towards the end of 2017, the sedan soldiered on in some other markets, including North America. But that’s about to change.

According to Ford Authority, production of the Fusion – which is known in parts of the world as the Mondeo – will come to an end on 21 July 2020 as Ford shifts its focus towards SUVs and pick-up trucks in the United States. Of course, as the publication points out, that date could change slightly thanks to uncertainty sparked by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

A report from mid-2018 suggested while Ford would eventually kill off the Fusion saloon, its nameplate would live on. Indeed, the company seemingly plans to affix the Fusion badge to a “high-roofed hatchback” similar in concept to the Subaru Outback. This new crossover would likely, the report added, retain the Fusion sedan’s basic underpinnings.

Before its demise in South Africa, the Fusion was available locally with either a 1,5-litre EcoBoost engine, a 2,0-litre EcoBoost unit or a 2,0-litre TDCi powerplant.
