Mitsubishi has launched its updated Eclipse Cross in South Africa. Available in two variants, these being a 2,0 GLS priced at R459 995 and a 1,5T GLS at R499 995, the compact SUV receives a cleaner look as well as new tech.
Whereas most facelifts are concentrated around the front of the car, it’s the rear end that received the most attention here, with the previous model’s controversial split-level tailgate making way for a more conventional tail design that’s easier on the eye. That’s not to say that the front end has been left unattended, and here we see a bolder interpretation of Mitsubishi’s ‘Shield Face’, now sporting a split lighting design that features new twin oval headlights. Incidentally, overall length has increased by 140 mm, which means the boot is now able to cope with 437 litres of luggage.
Beneath the resculpted bonnet you’ll find one of two carried-over engines. These take the form of a normally aspirated 2-litre petrol, with 110 kW and 198 N.m, and a 1,5-litre turbopetrol that’s also good for 110 kW, but with 250 N.m of torque. Both are paired with an eight-step CVT gearbox that powers the front wheels, with Mitsubishi’s all-wheel drive option now falling away.
The basic interior design continues unaltered, but buyers can look forward to a redesigned touchscreen sound system, which actually has a proper built-in volume knob too. Other features include cruise control, automatic air conditioning with rear ventilation, leather seats – with electric adjustment and heating for the front occupants – and a multi-function steering wheel.
All models are sold with a three-year / 100 000 km warranty and five-year / 90 000 km service plan.
