A collection of eight personalised numberplates has been sold at auction in Johannesburg for a whopping R1 890 000.
The plates – 1-GP through to 8-GP – were billed by auctioneers Stephan Welz & Co as “South Africa’s most valuable numberplate collection”, and fell just short of reaching their collective estimate.
Numbers 1-GP to 8-GP were sold to an unnamed classic car collector who intends to use them on eight of his prized possessions, according to Stephan Welz & Co consultant, Jack Rosewitz.
A ninth numberplate (9-GP) owned by Springbok rugby great Joost van der Westhuizen fetched a further R167 000, exceeding its estimated price.
Another personalised plate, Mandela-GP, sold for R66 000, while a Cobra race car once owned by late former SA cricket captain Clive Rice fetched R222 000.
