Shelby is getting ready to unleash its 2021 Super Snake line-up, and with 615 kW on command there is no shortage of venom here. With the South African order books now open, buyers can expect to pay R1 575 400 for the Super Snake tin-top conversion and R1 635 000 for the distinctive Speedster version. Keep in mind that these prices exclude the ‘base’ Ford Mustang that you’ll have to purchase, which is priced from R1 044 200 in GT form.
The Super Snake’s engine starts life as the stock 5,0-litre V8, which produces 331 kW, but Shelby carries out extensive modifications, including the fitment of a Whipple supercharger, to bring the tally to 615 kW. That’s sufficient, Shelby says, to launch the Super Snake from 0-100 km/h in just 3,5 seconds, which is 0,8 seconds faster than the standard GT’s claimed acceleration time.
The conversion also includes a brand new cooling system as well as a full Borla sports exhaust system. To help it cope with those track days, Shelby has created a Track Handling Package that includes 20-inch alloy wheels and a Shelby braking system with improved cooling and red callipers.
Clients can also look forward to a comprehensive exterior design package that will ensure nobody mistakes your Super Snake for a ‘run-of-the-mill’ Pony. Included here is a widebody package with broadened aluminium fenders, redesigned bonnet with Shelby scoops and striping, a unique Shelby front bumper and splitter, side skirts, diffuser and rear spoiler.
Those seeking something even more distinctive can take a look at the Super Snake Speedster conversion, which transforms the Mustang convertible into a two-seat roadster – because who needs backseat drivers anyway? The Speedster comes with a unique hard top tonneau system as well as bespoke striping and badging.
Shelby has also done some interior decorating in both Super Snake models, which come with a new cluster and gauges as well as Shelby floor mats and door sills, and Carroll Shelby Mustang numbering on the dashboard, in case anyone forgets what special cars these are.
On that note, numbers are very limited, with Shelby producing just 98 of the tin-top Super Snakes (to commemorate founder Carroll Shelby’s birth date) and the Speedster will be an even rarer proposition, with just 25 set to be produced.
